Artist: TRONUS ABYSS
Title: Vuoto Spazio Trionfo
Format: CD
Country: Italy
Genre: Industrial Black Metal
Record Label: ATMF
The re-release of the at that time revolutionary 2003 “Kampf” has unveiled the story of one of the most innovative bands in the Black Metal field, trespassing on the electro and apocalyptic field. After 5 years it’s time to give a new sign of communication and “Vuoto, Spazio, Trionfo” is a challenging and magnificent merging of noise /ambient / apocalyptic soundscapes and Black Metal de-fragmented memories. Not like the many wannabe pseudo-experimental acts TA sets new standard thanks to many years of electronic shaping of their sound and the very inner core of visionary Black metal. Starting from the rusty songs of the album to the more liquid and open atmospheres TA won the challenge of doing experimental and personal music in spite of the today tendency to follow the rules and market standards.

Review:

Written by Heraklyon [Metal Archives]

My new metal passion has got to be the Italian scene, as it is offering me fabulous suggestions each new day, week after week and honestly, I had never paid any kind of attention to it. Luckily, this year I had the opportunity to snatch a couple of records that proved how ignorant I’ve been being and how poor my musical knowledge concerning the Italian scene was. From the balls-to-the-wall massive brutal death slab from Hour of Penance’s third offering, to Janvs’ blackish progressive pearl named Vega, to Strix’s more straight-forward howling black assault in form of an EP, 2008 has proved to be a year of revelations and before it ends, I am confronted with another brilliant Italian work, known as “Vuoto Spazio Trionfo” from the former medieval blacksters Tronus Abyss, now completely turned into electronic masters with scarce hints of black metal. This is the band’s fourth release (they’ve been here for around 14 years, so they’re not particularly a young and naïve bunch of teens experimenting stuff just for the sake of it), but since I did not hear the previous works in their entirety, I am forced to judge this release singularly without comparisons which isn’t by any means a bad thing.

As it was said already, few are the black elements that could trace the past down to the first recordings of this band so what we have presented here is an electronic masterwork with various influences, with kind and enough distortion to please the fans of Nadja and even managing to grab the attention of some more psychedelic and experimentalism addicts, it still has the time to have some incursions on the ambient field. Revolving around involving simplistic melodies, sometimes hidden under a faint curtain of distortion, the songs can be carried by very distinct types of vocalization that may range from android-like spoken sentences to harsh mournful manifestations in form of a blackish type of shrieking, but often bordering the clean vocal realm. Most of the tracks can be described as a small river, flowing calmly and slowly towards the river mouth, but on its way there are elements scattered here and there, like tree trunks or leafs, every single one different but united as one with the flow. This interpretation seems pretty close to the music, as it possesses small details here and there, different from song to song, that although incredibly strange at the beginning, look remarkably fitting the atmosphere in a very distinct way. These details can be Muslim-like chants or even classical chants, popular Italian music (from the 30’s or 40’s, not like Toto Cotugno’s or Eros Ramazotti’s type), voices intoning poems, a melancholic piano, or even a cathartic electric guitar riff. Obviously this type of ambiance is mostly based on samplers, keyboards and synthesizers so the bass work is almost non-existent and the drums are used in an economical and precise way. Nevertheless, the guitar stills has a preponderant task as I already stated its importance on driving most of the songs with its slight distortion or even with acoustic chords. I’ve also noticed sometimes a very mechanical feeling on the songs pace and structure, often reminding me of machines working with some kind of melody on its back, as if the machines were alive, which is a very curious way of recreating their industrial label.

All 13 songs from “Vuotto Spazio Trionfo” are very different from each other, so there is basically no link whatsoever among those, giving an slightly uncomfortable feeling of incoherence, which basically seems like they’ve picked 13 songs in some kind of random way to make it to the album but on the other hand, this lack of coherency makes the voyage even more unique and varied. Variation and originality are two adjectives that fit perfectly the band’s sounding and should be taken very seriously because, if you haven’t noticed by now, this trip is long and schizophrenic, even if in a peaceful way. Imagine that you’re on acids, floating on a river, watching the clouds fly by, going with the fluvial stream, coming from the austere mountains, crossing yellow corn fields, hot deserts, silent forests, unpopulated cities, all the way until the salty and cold ocean, all the tracks represent a different landscape of ethereal contours.

This album has got me completely by surprise, since I didn’t expect what to hear, it simply blew my expectations in a very distinctive way, with its sheer beauty, sense of freedom and vision. While the instruments of the average metal band are scarcely used in their usual form, the lack of heaviness is complemented by the pure feeling of the dreamlike atmosphere. Not only does this album proves that Tronus Abyss took a step in the right direction but shows that they are treading a path that few opt to tread, regardless of the consequences, but denoting skillful mastery and intriguing concepts. Tronus Abyss may have thrown black metal to their backs, but this new face side of theirs, has come and I hope it is here to stay.
